If you have a website that already gets a decent amount of traffic, you might be interested in ways to earn a little extra money with it. There are programs that will place small contextual ads on your site that allow you to earn money. Every time someone clicks an ad, you earn.
What Are Contextual Ads?
This is an advertising system that will scan the content of a web page and determine what that page is about. It picks up the keywords of the page, and then places advertisements on that page that are relevant to the subject of the page.
For instance, if your blog had a post about a major golf tournament, the program would place advertisements related to golf. The ads will be related to a subject your readers are interested in.
If you have heard of Google's AdSense, you are probably aware of this type of program. There are millions of web pages that have ads on them that are marked "Ads by Google." Those are AdSense contextual ads.
How Does it Work?
Because AdSense was the first, and is still the biggest program around, they are a great example to use in explaining the system. Google allows clients to bid on the keywords they want to use to advertise their product or service. The more they bid, the higher their ad gets placed.
What the bid means is that the ad buyer is willing to pay the bid amount for every person that clicks on their ad. If their bid was 10-cents, they will pay a dime for every visitor. In order to get those ads placed as many times as possible, Google is willing to pay you for ad space.
If an ad appears on your site and one of your visitors clicks the ad, you will get paid a small percentage of what Google earns from the ad. That can be anywhere from a few cents to over $1.00 per click. The more Google earns the more you can earn.
How much can You Earn ?
In order to make more than just a dollar or two a month, you really need to bring a lot of traffic to your website. Statistically, only a small percentage of people actually click on the contextual ads. It becomes a numbers game. The more people that come, the more people will click.
Some people earn a nice income off of programs like AdSense. For others it is a nice additional income stream for their site. They make money off of the marketing they are already doing for their Internet business or blog. You might not get rich but it does help pay the bills.
You are already bringing traffic in. You might as well try to capture as much money as you can from your visitors. It is a good way to get a little money out of them before they leave.
